Saiko! The Large Family (TW: Domestic violence, murder), subtle spoilers ahead!
This movie was reccomended to me by an instagram influencer who usually reccomends good movies, this one included!
"Saiko! The Large Family" is about, as the title suggests, a large family in Japan. It's a mockumentary-style horror film revolving around the Ura family. The father of the family mysteriously disappeared 7 years ago, and the "new father" has trouble connecting with the children.
This movie was... strange to say the least. It is clear there is something very wrong with the family; the daughter beats the new father up and no one really bats an eye, all kinds of accidents happen, and above all the mother of the family acts strangely nice. I love how the movie feels so real. It feels like the type of early 2000s documentary you'd watch in English class, but with weird twists. I still don't think I fully understand it. Rewatching some of the bits made me realise how much effort was really put into making this, for example, in any of the family interviews, the mother is ALWAYS watching from a distance if you pay attention to the background. It gives off a very creepy vibe.
I don't know what to say really, it's a good movie. It's eerie, creepy, and definitively deserving of a watch. It's free on youtube and only 1:35 hours, so I reccomend watching it with as little knowledge as possible like I did.
Watch it here!PS: The prequel That I watched today (July 12 2025) answered a lot of questions from this movie, but also raised some. Overall I think this one was better than the prequel, because it was more creepy and mysterious. I do think the prequel had better and more convincing acting even tho the first one felt super realistic.
